Invisalign Clear Aligners - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear plastic trays that gradually shift your teeth into position over time. Each set of trays is worn for about two weeks before you move to the next set in the series. You wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day and take them out to eat, drink, and brush your teeth.

Treatment is mapped out digitally before you even start, which means you can see a projection of where your teeth are headed before you commit.

  • Invisalign works well for a wide range of alignment issues including crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite. It tends to be a strong fit for adults and older teens who are disciplined about wearing the trays consistently.

If your case is more complex, traditional orthodontics may be a better route. We will tell you honestly which direction makes sense for your situation.

  • A lot of our Invisalign patients are adults who had braces as kids, saw some shifting over the years, and want to correct it without the look and inconvenience of traditional braces. Others never had orthodontic treatment at all and are finally doing something about it. Both are completely common and both are treatable.

The fact that the trays are nearly invisible matters a lot for people who are in professional settings or just prefer not to make their dental work a visible part of everyday life.

  • For teens who are responsible about wearing the aligners consistently, Invisalign is a solid alternative to traditional braces. The trays come with compliance indicators so you can track wear time, and there are replacement aligners built into the plan for any that get lost.

If you're not sure whether your teenager is a good fit, bring them in. We'll assess their case and give you a straight answer.

  • Most Invisalign cases take between 12 and 18 months, though simpler cases can be shorter. Cost varies depending on the complexity of your case and how many aligners your treatment requires. We will go over all of this at your consultation so there are no surprises.

  • Invisalign is sometimes covered partially by dental insurance under orthodontic benefits. We are in-network with Delta Dental. If you have a different plan, we will help you understand what your coverage looks like before you make any decisions. We also have flexible financing options!

  • There's typically some pressure when you switch to a new set of trays, which is normal and a sign the trays are doing their job.

It usually fades within a day or two. It's different from the soreness some people remember from braces adjustments.

Some patients even report enjoying the slight feeling of pressure and soreness (probably because it means the treatment is working - and that your smile is beginning to improve).

You also don’t have to worry about the uncomfortable and abrasive wires that come with braces! In general, they’re much more comfortable than more invasive orthodontic alignment.

  • You should take the trays out before drinking anything other than water. Coffee and tea can stain the plastic and hot drinks can warp the trays. It's an adjustment, but most people get used to the routine quickly.

  • Call us. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we'll either have you move ahead to the next set or order a replacement. It's not a crisis.

  • Rinse them with cool water and brush them gently with a toothbrush. Avoid hot water. There are also Invisalign cleaning crystals if you want a deeper clean. The main thing is not to let them sit without rinsing.

  • Treatment will take longer. The trays only work when they're in. Twenty-two hours a day is the target. If that feels unrealistic for your lifestyle, it's worth talking through at the consultation.

  • Yes. Once treatment is done, you'll need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position. This is true with any orthodontic treatment. We'll go over the details when you're close to finishing.
